Spotted Salamander

It wasn’t the biggest night that I’ve ever observed… but there were Spotted Salamanders in our vernal pool last night…  I was a little disturbed to see this big fellow:

Snapping Turtle

Do Snapping Turtles eat Spotted Salamanders?  I know they eat the eggs!

I’d tell you more… but I’m running late for our Volunteer Appreciation Pancake Breakfast.  And I’m one of the cooks!

We had the numbers in the roads last night to be a big night but I agree . . . just not that many in the pools getting busy!

Yay for the salamanders.
And yay for the people who stand out in the rain waiting for them!! :-)

Evidentially “your” vernal pool is of the permanent type that seldom or never dries up,so the snapper is right at home. As for their diet,I always thought that they ate anything that came along. Why would they not eat spotteds ??

I think that snappers are fairly undiscerning in their diets … maybe it’s time to move him somewhere else?
