Erin White from the DEC was in town to train more volunteers for the Dragonfly and Damselfly Survey. That’s her on the far right side of the photo showing people how to use the field guide to ID a dragonfly. We had a great day with positive identifications for 12 species. All were found at the little pond behind the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, NY.
There were lots of great finds. A new one for me was the Prince Baskettail. This is a pretty large dragonfly! It was a teneral (newly emerged), so it was pretty lethargic and let us get some good photos!
Jeremy Martin and Tom LeBlanc were both there. I don’t know if they have posted any photos yet, but I’m sure they will. Be sure to check their Flickr photo streams!
I had fun holding a dragon with one hand and photographing it with the other. My favorite was this Common Green Darner that eluded us for most of the day, but was finally netted by Jeremy.
You can see more of the photos at my Flickr site. We’re going out again tomorrow at Audubon. I forgot to look for Swamp Milkweed Leaf Beetle eggs today. But tomorrow, I’ll definitely look!
Looks like you had a great day Jen! It was nice to see you on the other side of the camera on Tom’s blog.
Jen – hmm, thought I had commented on here but guess I didn’t! Hmm Anyways, what a wonderful day we had and sure wish I could have made it over to the audubon today and look at dragonflies! I have a few things I need to do this morning. It was great seeing you again!
Between you and Tom, I have learned a lot about dragonflies this week. I had no idea there was such beautiful variety.
