Yesterday, Sarah asked me to write an article for Audubon’s regular Saturday column in our local papers. I said, “Yeah, why not? What do you want me to write about?” She said she didn’t care. So, I grabbed my camera and went for a walk. I figured I’d write about the first thing that caught my eye: Red Berries!
I’m not sure what the article will look like… 500-700 words… but it will contain some or all of these pictures. Let’s try that game again. Before you put your mouse over the picture to see the name of the plant, try to guess it!
How did you do? How about this: do you know which are native and which are not?
And one more challenge: There is one more red berry that you can find at Audubon that I didn’t manage to get a picture of… It’s fuzzy… What is it?
(By the way, my article is due to Sarah Monday and will appear in the paper next Saturday, December 8th…)
Sumac? (I’m not usually good with guessing games, but I thought I would give it a try!)
I didn’t do well with the guessing. Will you be posting your article here? … so we across the continent can have a read?
Don’t know the answer but…..Ooooohh, I love red berries, all berries actually. Nice pictures and congrats on the article! I’m looking forward to reading it.
Hurrah Jen!
I’ve missed your blog. This will be a great article for the paper. Don’t know much about berries, but the birds love them and so do I! So sorry I missed your program at Thanksgiving with the Birds – I’ve heard lots of good thing about it.
@Karen – you got it! Sumac…
@Eileen and Chicago – OK, I’ll post it here…
@Linda – yeah… I just don’t seem to be able to keep up with a daily post. But thanks for checking in regularly. Sorry you were sick for T w/the B. It was my first… Maybe I’ll sit with you next year!
Hi Jennifer,
How cool that you get to write an article for the paper. I hope they plan on using your wonderful photos too.
I got only 3 without peeking–the two hollies and the crabapple. How about highbush cranberry? I still have some red fruit left on mine.
@ Ruthie: Interestingly, I know we have high bush cranberry on our site, but I don’t recall seeing any berries this year… Hmm…. Being in the viburnum family, I wonder if they succumbed to the Viburnum Leaf Beetle?
I like thee way the name pops up when the mouse moves over the photo. You could do that with all sorts of things – trees, ferns, butterflies, whatever!
So neat you’ve written this article, I would guess but I came from Flickr where I already saw all the names 😉
