30-day Sit Spot Challenge

Rose Hips for Valentine's DayWell, I did it.  I signed up for the 30-day Sit Spot challenge.  It starts today, but it’s not too late.  You can sign up, too…  And, they are pretty forgiving… If you find out about it late, they just ask that you extend your sitting for a full 30 days.

The idea is that you go to a natural place and sit for 20 minutes each day for 30 days.  You write about it, photograph it, sketch it, paint it…  Whatever…  If you choose to share your experiences with the Wilderness Awareness folks, they may include your contributions in their on-line or print newsletter.  (That should not be your motivation to do it, though!)

Read about it here: Sit Spot Challenge

Any takers?

  1. I really like this idea. The challenge would be the every day part for me, since I split my week between two locations. Also, this would be easier to get motivated to do in, say, May or June. Or really any time of the year where you’re not going to get chilled (or even frozen) sitting still for 20 minutes. 🙂 All but one of their photos are summer/fall photos, but I didn’t notice anything that indicated they ran this more than once in the year.

  2. I like the meditative idea for this challenge. I once did something similar for an ecology class. Enjoy your “sit spot” – I look forward to seeing what you share.

  3. Cool! Thanks for the tip. I’m going to sign up too. I have days where 20 minutes is going to be tough to find, and it sure would be easier to do in say, May, but it’s still a neat idea.

  4. I tried to sign up–that’s quite a test in itself–so not sure if I’m really on board, but I like the concept!
I’ll use it to follow my vernal pool–there’s so much to absorb in that spot, it’s the perfect match for a quite time.
Thanks for the tip–I can’t wait to see where you sit!

  5. If I sat for 20 minutes outdoors here this week, I would be a block of ice…got to keep moving when outdoors. Like your first commenter said, this would be a good spring-time activity. We are supposed to get another 20-30 cm snow this weekend.

  6. Hi Winter Woman,
What a revolutionary act to be outside without going anywhere or doing anything. My car died about 3 weeks ago, so I have been taking the bus and (!) walking (!). It’s very cold here, but it’s quite manageable. I’m seeing so many details in nature. Have fun with your project.
