I’ve only seen one scarlet tanager, and that was 20 years ago. What struck me (to this day) was how RED it was. It practically screamed RED. Wonderful bird, great photo.
I, sadly, have not been graced with this beautiful bird’s presence. But this photo certainly shall do for now. These birds are so colorful. They almost seem as though they belong in the tropics!
I have not yet heard anything about dead tree swallows this year, so you may be the early warning system on this one. Last year, however, lots of swallows and other insect-eating birds were found dead along the Susquehanna River after spraying for mosquitos. At one point, West Nile virus was also implicated as at least a secondary issue.
